Having made more than 700 appearances with the Blues, Chelsea captain John Terry could be waving goodbye to the Stamford Bridge support at the end of the season.
Interim Chelsea boss Guus Hiddink highlighted that Terry plays a huge role in the club’s history, which is why he “deserves a goodbye” that reflects his stature. “Whether he stays, whether he goes – in the last option, he deserves a huge goodbye,” said the Dutch manager. “(But) it’s never goodbye with these players, because I think in the near future, whatever happens, they can have a big impact in clubs.”
Chelsea have developed a reputation over the years for not being forthcoming to players that have passed the age of 30. Considering that the Chelsea captain is now 35 years of age, his best years are behind him, which could very well see the club seek for a younger replacement in his position. Some online sportsbooks are even offering odds on him leaving the club. (Check out Betting Herald’s online sportsbook review section for a full list of betting sites.)
Hiddink highlighted that chiefs at the club want to take their time with this decision, as Terry is not an ordinary case. The Chelsea captain is a special player that has been with the club for nearly two decades, and seeing him depart the Blues could anger a section of the support. “People who are making the decisions want to take their time. That’s up to them,” Hiddink said. “That doesn’t mean there’s (been) dramatic; bad treatment so far, but everyone has his own approach to deal with this matter. It’s the same as Ashley Cole and Lampard. I don’t neglect the facts.”
“But there is a strategy. I’m not having a conversation inside the club and they choose what they choose. I don’t know the state of mind of the fans but my personal opinion is that when you know your plans once you know which way you’re going in the future, then you can be transparent,” stressed the Chelsea manager. “It’s up to the club. It’s not up to me. It’s for the board and the (new) management.”
The Chelsea captain didn’t feature in last night’s 1-1 draw against Liverpool, and he’s not likely to make another appearance for the London side. In his 18-year stay with the Blues, he’s made a total of 703 appearances and scored 66 goals across all competitions, winning four Premier League titles and a Champions League trophy in the process, among many other accolades.
