McIlroy won The Open Championship in 2014, however a year later he relinquished it to American Zach Johnson who is currently ranked world’s No. 18 – 14 places behind the Northern Irish star. Recently, there has been a great deal of debate whether Golf as a sport has a place in the Olympics and whether it can remain competitive considering many other events take greater precedence.
The sport has been absent as an event in the Games for 112 years, and questions marks have been raised whether it should be reinstated after such a long time on the sidelines. Golf events made appearances only on two editions of the Olympics: in 1900 (Paris) and 1904 (St. Louis, Missouri).

“I don’t know if golf has its place in the Olympics now,” said Johnson during a press conference at the Open on Minday. “We are relevant 24/7, 365 days of the year, if that’s your barometer and criteria, relevancy. I think golf fans really look forward to the majors…and the Ryder Cup in particular. I know, as a player, those are my main motivations.”
“No offense to the Olympics but I’d rather be on the Ryder Cup team. As an American golfer I have that opportunity and that’s what I’d rather,” commented the 40-year-old, who will be looking to retain the Claret Cup after winning it last year.
