Juventus Clinch Five Straight Scudettos

Serie A Title

Following Napoli’s defeat to Roma on Monday, the Turin side were crowned champions of Italy – this saw them achieve five straight Scudettos.

With two games remaining in Serie A, Juventus boast 85 points, a cool 12 points clear of second-placed Napoli. This season’s title win takes their tally to a total of 32 Scudettos, while two additional championship crowns (2005-06) were stripped off of them due to the Calciopoli scandal.

Juventus’ defender Leonardo Bonucci highlighted how they’ve been written off at the beginning of the seasons when the team were struggling to find form, as they were in 11th position in late October last year. “It’s been a crazy season given everything that has happened,” said the 28-year-old. “They wrote us off as dead in October, but they forgot that we carry the Juventus Scudetto on our crest.”

“We had to change course, the Juventus of the first few months was too bad to be the real one. Credit should be given to the coach, who allowed us to think about every game without anxiety. No one expected Juventus to the Scudetto in April. This will go down in history for the way it came and because it’s the fifth.”

Juventus boss Massimiliano Allegri stressed that they’ve done a marvellous job in regaining momentum, which saw them accomplish five straight Scudettos with their latest title. “We did really well to come back – to be 12 points clear with three games to go is huge. Juve have done something amazing. Now we’ve got three games to honour before the Coppa Italia final,” said the Juve manager.

He also added that the team has great potential for the future considering their well-rounded squad, and that their main aim for next season is Champions League glory. “This is the first brick, considering we’re a young squad, on the way to winning the Champions League, which has got to be our objective for next season,” asserted the former AC Milan manager. “Juve had a great Champions League campaign this year but we can still get better. We need a bit of luck, but we’ve creted some solid foundations.”

Juventus have completed a full circle by winning five straight Scudettos. This feat was started by them in the Italian top flight by clinching five league titles between 1931-35, while cross-town rivals Torino were the second club to do this between 1943-49 (Serie A was cancelled between 1943-45 due to WWII).

Five straight Scudettos wouldn’t have been achieved again for another six decades, when Inter Milan claimed the Italian league in the mid-to-late 2000s (2006-10). The only other side from Europe’s top leagues that has managed to win five championships in a row is Real Madrid (1961-65 and 1986-90), while French side Lyon achieved unprecedented success with seven straight titles (2002-08).

The Turin side 1.28 (2/7) will next face Carpi 10.00 (9/1) this Sunday, but considering they’ve just won the title we’re guessing they won’t bother to waste their energy as they’ve got a more important game against AC Milan in the Coppa Italia final (May 21). Bet365 Sports strongly favors Allegri’s men 1.83 (5/6), while the Rossoneri are complete outsiders 4.50 (12/5). A draw between the two stands at 3.40 (7/2), however everything is pointing in Juventus’ favour. Winning the cup would be an ideal finish to the season.
