Photographs featuring Mauricio Pochettino with Sir Alex Ferguson have been released by daily tabloid newspaper The Sun. According to sources, the pair met for a social occasion with the hierarchy at Tottenham having been aware of the meeting. Make of this what you want, but the Argentine is one of the top candidates to replace Louis van Gaal at Old Trafford, according to online sportsbooks’ odds.
David Lammy, Labour MP for Tottenham, informed Spurs supporters in February that former Manchester United boss Ferguson heaped praised on Mauricio Pochettino. “About six weeks ago, I sat next to Sir Alex Ferguson at a dinner in support of grass-roots football abroad. He said to me: ‘I think you guys have got the best manager in the Premier League.’ Alex Ferguson said that.”
Despite verbally agreeing to add two years to his already existing contract, Mauricio Pochettino is yet to sign an official agreement that would see him stay with the North London club until 2021, according to ESPN.
Mauricio Pochettino is third favourite to land the coveted manager’s seat at Old Trafford 6.00 (5/1), per online sportsbook BetVictor. (Check out Betting Herald’s BetVictor Sports Review for more info about the online sportsbook.)
Ryan Giggs is right behind him with odds of 7.00 (6/1), while Ronald Koeman is fifth favourtie to land the job 15.00 (14/1). Some of the outsiders for the prestigious post include the following players: Diego Simeone, Luis Enrique, Manuel Pellegrini and Mark Hughes – all of whom have been assigned chances of 34.00 (33/1).
Former Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho remains the ultimate favourite 1.20 (1/5) to take over the troubled club, as they look to once again become a dominant force in England and Europe. The Portuguese has abundant experience in managing top clubs, after having won domestic league titles in four different countries (Portugal, England, Italy and Spain) and lifting the Champions League trophy twice.
Although Mauricio Pochettino has done a phenomenal job with Spurs this season, doubts linger whether he could actually manage a top club like Manchester United – where a different degree of pressure is put on the manager to deliver.
